He relies on the textbooks to teach his students rather than teaching himself. His lectures are mundane with a few dry jokes. It is clear that he's a history buff but thinks everyone should be as enthusiastic as he is. Answers your question with a question. Overall not a fun and exciting class, …more students left often and early or didn't show up at all less

Terrible professor, he is smart, know a lot but i felt like he was up there trying to prove he should be there. I just wanted to tell him," We know you know about this stuff, but you need to teach it now"

Spanier: a down-to-Earth professor who will work with you outside of class if needed. His #1 rule is to have fun with learning History & if you get into it, the class can be fun. Basically just try your best to go to all classes, keep up with the material, and you should be able to ace the tests. …more It's not a slacking class, but it's worth your time! less

This professor made me feel that I was capable of achieving an A from the very start. He is very organized and clear about his course/goals for his students-he was there at any time to help or work with me. Genuinely cares. Interactive lectures, office hours/email edits on papers were key. Highly …more recommended, reminded me why I am a history major. less

The person below who wrote "we know you know this stuff, now you have to teach it" got it exactly right-except that sometimes it wasn't totally clear whether or not he even knew the material. He demands "higher level thinking" but has a revolting tendency to make history cutesy. A let down for any …more serious student interested in research and learning less

I wish I could give this professor all 5s - that'd show how I really feel. Unfortunately, a 5 in 'easiness' is a 'bad' thing on here, so the numbers look less glowing than they're intended to be. Anyway... Professor Spanier is a terrifically enthusiastic, insightful, learned, and engaging professor …more - the best you could ask for in a History class. less

This guy rules. Very clear, great lectures, I learned a lot. He really cares about his students. One of the few classes I really looked forward to sitting through every day. I was never bored in his class. Wish he taught more courses! Would recommend.
