Merritt gives his students a rubric which he uses to grade assignments, then proceeds not to use it. He is eager to help students but is vague when giving feedback & will often not answer the question fully or correctly. Unfortunately, his inability to demonstrate correlation between theory & …more practice suggests he lacks of proper experience. less

Class is graded out of 100pts(three 20pt in-class written exams, 25pt paper, and 15pt participation). In his own words, it isn't a "kick-it" class. As long as you prepare, show up, pay attention, and participate, you should be good. The organization and conciseness of the class outweighs any …more strictness in my opinion. less

Dont come to class unprepared or not read the assigned readings for each class. He pulls notecards of names and asks for thoughts on the readings. If you havent done it you will look dumb.

I really enjoyed Dr. Merritt. His expectations were clear and reasonable. He offered a great survey of public policy and affairs. He expects you to participate and come to class and do the readings, but he will joke around and he genuinely cares about his students doing well. He's a nice guy. I …more would definitely recommend taking his class. less

Professor Merritt is great. He really respects every student, and gives everyone a chance to express their reasoning. He is very professional and predictable, and will never throw surprises. The assessments are based on the in-class discussion, so preparing for class prepares you for the …more assessments. Attendance is a must. less

He expects you to show up for class, have the material read and be ready to participate. Usually there is one class with lecture and the next class is group discussion over the same material. The course is quite challenging but you literally prepare for the assessments in class so if you show up …more and prepare outside of class you will easily do well. less

If you don't like showing up to class or read the required material, you shouldn't take this class. He challenges you, in a good way, and let's you know what exactly he looks for in his assessments. Having trouble with them? Go have a one-on-one meeting with him. He will tell you what he looks for. …more Increased my grade by two letter grades. less

He's really passionate about teaching and wants to help his students. However, he didn't lecture enough and instead time was spent talking to the same group of students assigned to you at the beginning of the semester. Class time was inefficiently spent by dragging out topics purely to meet the …more time requirement. less

This is by far the best teacher I've had at the university level. The class is tough but the good kind of tough. He really pushes students to do above and beyond the call of the class and I loved that. Make sure to keep up on readings but overall wonderful teacher. Not one ill thing to say

Dr. Merritt's iteration of V-170 is challenging, there is no getting around that. I recommend anyone considering SPEA as a major to take this class. Dr. Merritt's approach will either encourage you to buy all the way in to SPEA or you will realize this just isn't for you. Expect inspirational …more speeches on a weekly basis and high quality office hours less
