Class is a little boring, but it's history so what do you expect. Exams weren't always easy, but they were fair. If you take notes and pay attention you'll pass the class.

He teaches history well, and knows his stuff. Not the most exciting class, but one can't expect much from a history class.

I thought he was great! He was hilarious and entertaining. He gives essay tests but gives you the questions 2 weeks in advance. He'll give u 4 to study but only pick 2 for the test. Research paper wasn't bad either.

The opportunity to take a class on Frederick Douglass by one of the top Douglass scholars in the country was too good too pass up. Dr McKivigan knows his stuff. He's a walking encyclopedia of 19th century history. His lectures are informative and the guy has a good sense of humor. Expect to …more read and write a lot. less

His Civil War and Reconstruction class was one of the best I've ever taken. Extremely informative, great lectures, and interesting books. Requires a lot of reading and critical thinking, but that's what I love about history. Don't miss your chance to learn from this guy. He's brilliant.

Gave B instead of B+ for 88% course grade because of attendance. Student affairs fixed that up real quick, but he was adamant about not changing it prior to appeal. So, contrary to the syllabus, attendance IS mandatory, and can subjectively impact your grade. His redeeming quality is that he seemed …more skilled overall with conveying the material. less

very good professor. He is very passionate about american history.... especially the gilded age. He provides many outlines to help you study and he makes class very interesting. I recommend him if you are planning to take an american history course.
