Jay is a nice man who expects quite a bit from his students. He is pesky about grammar, but he is good leader of discussion. His main problem is in grading. I liked the class on some days, but in the end I got a C+ because he believes C to be average.

Jay is an amazing professor. Both in Tools and Poetry my writing and understanding of literature grew tremendously. He is very willing to work with you, and very compassionate. Tough grader, lots of work, but he wants to help you tell your story!

Jay's class literally changed the course of events in my hectic life. I became unafraid to share the bad in my life. I became more honest with myself. So I did have to write that Equus paper five times, but hey...small price to pay.

this is the hardest class i have ever taken. extreme amounts of reading and writing, however, it's not busy work, all the work is relevant. overall, great class. he's very wise and a great teacher.

Jay is absolutely brilliant. Most definitely the best teacher I have ever had. I might have gotten mediocre to bad grades sometimes*, but I realized in the end was what I deserved. You cannot just say it was "a hard class" in the end, you realize YOU didn't earn a better grade.

Brilliant man. The hardest class I had by FAR this semester. Class may provoke self reflection, however it is a HEAVY workload (lots of writing and reading) which can take away from your appreciation for the class. Good if you're up for a challenge, otherwise you might want to choose another course.

Class was insightful, but the workload was hard. Jay is good at facilitating discussion. One of the assignments was very personal, when I tried to tell him that I wasn't comfortable with it, he seemed put off and wasn't very helpful. He was presumptuous in this and other ways.
