The workload in Philosophy of Language is relatively minimal: two tests (the lower of which he will drop), a "research" paper (you choose a philosopher and agree/disagree with one thing he says), and a final. I found myself lost sometimes during lectures because he talks kind of like a …more philosophy textbook, but he is always happy to answer questions less

I think he kind of likes getting sidetracked and will speculate about whatever you ask him. Never ever be afraid to go on a philosophical tangent in this class. He encourages it. Initially this class might seem intimidating or boring, but Thayer is helpful and kind. If you like to think and …more express your thoughts, you will like this class. less

father thayer is a WONDERFUL philosophy professor. he is an absolute genius, he's funny, and somewhat intimidating. if you have a sincere appreciation for philosophy and want to challenge yourself in an unusual area of study (PHIL 315: Philosophy of Language) take father thayer's class. (ps- don't …more let the first day of class scare you...) less

I never opened any of the text books. As long as you go to class, your fine.

Test questions are impossible to understand because of his wording and the entire class is merely him rambling through the material that nobody in class understands. All of the students are either on their phones or sleeping.

Nice man but cannot explain material in coherent way during lecture. Test questions are difficult to understand for the same reason. Avoid if possible.

Absolutely atrocious. He teaches as if his audience are all getting their doctorate in philosophy. Very pompous and tries to show how smart he is by describing everything in the most difficult way. Avoid at all costs.
